Phillip Island, Timed Around Dusk

Phillip Island is about 140 km from Melbourne, roughly two hours each way on the M1 and then the Bass Highway, crossing the bridge at San Remo. The whole day is shaped by one fixed point: the penguins come ashore at dusk, and dusk moves by more than two hours between summer and winter. We work the departure backwards from sunset on your date.

The Penguin Parade

The parade is at Summerland Beach on the western tip. Tickets are booked separately and in tiers, and the viewing areas fill well before the birds arrive, so being early matters more than most visitors expect. Afterwards the car park empties slowly. A chauffeur waiting in a known spot is the difference between leaving at once and queueing.

What Fits Before Sunset

There is most of a day before the parade. The Nobbies sit at the far western point with a boardwalk above the seal colony. Churchill Island is a working heritage farm just past the bridge. The Koala Conservation Reserve has elevated walkways through the treetops, and Cape Woolamai has the island's best cliff walking. Three of those fit comfortably around a late lunch.

The Drive Home

The parade finishes after dark and the run back to Melbourne is another two hours. That late leg is the part guests most often say made the chauffeur worth booking, particularly with children asleep in the back. For groups above four we use a van so everyone travels together.

Combining With Other Days

Phillip Island sits far enough south-east that it does not combine with the Mornington Peninsula or the Great Ocean Road in the same day. Each of those is a full day of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time do we need to leave Melbourne?
It depends on the date. The parade starts at dusk, which is after 8pm in midsummer and before 5.30pm in midwinter. We check sunset for your date and set the departure so you arrive with time to park and be seated.
Do you book the Penguin Parade tickets?
Tickets are booked directly with the parade, in several viewing tiers. We plan the day around the session you hold, so send the confirmation once you have it.
How long is the drive?
About two hours each way, roughly 140 km via the M1, the Bass Highway and the San Remo bridge. Allow a little more on summer weekends.
What else is worth seeing on the island?
The Nobbies boardwalk above the seal colony, Churchill Island heritage farm, the Koala Conservation Reserve walkways and the cliffs at Cape Woolamai. Three of those fit around lunch before the parade.
Is it a good trip with young children?
It is one of the better ones, mainly because of the drive home. The parade finishes after dark and the return leg is two hours, which is a long way with tired children in the car.
Can we combine Phillip Island with the Great Ocean Road?
Not in one day. They sit on opposite sides of Melbourne and each is a full day. Guests with time usually take them on consecutive days.
